A BANNED drinker who smashed a pub window after being thrown out, and then assaulted a policeman, has been jailed.
Philip Ison was spotted boozing by staff in the Dock Hotel in Amble on December 27, even though he had previously been barred from every pub in the local Pubwatch scheme.
But the 30-year-old, from Straffen Court in the town, took exception when he w
as asked to leave.
He became more aggressive as he stepped outside onto Queen Street, and witnesses saw him smash one of the pub's windows.
Ison then head-butted the window of the neighbouring Raggy Dolls shop, causing the pane to crack.
Police were called to the scene, and saw Ison running down Dovecote Street towards Straffen Court.
They followed him, and he was arrested.
The prosecution told Alnwick magistrates: "He was very drunk, and as a result of that he was taken on to the police station at Bedlington.
"On his way there, Ison became more argumentative, and on the way to the cell he grabbed the constable by the neck and began to squeeze.
"A struggle ensued and they fell to the floor, where Ison had to be subdued by officers."
As he struggled with the police, the court heard, Ison shouted: "There's no space left in jail. I love it. It's your tax that will pay my fine."
In his defence, Ison was said to have a 'chronic' alcohol problem, stemming from his early teens and related to his violent upbringing.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of causing criminal damage, and one of assaulting the police officer.
It was also explained that Ison had undergone some treatment for his drinking, and would be looking for further help.
But the chairman of the bench told him: "This was a prolonged incident, you assaulted a constable and you had to be restrained by others.
"We find this matter so serious that we must impose a custodial sentence."
Ison was jailed for four months, less the time he had spent on remand.
No compensation order was made against him, and he was not fined.
