Alarms help drive down crime

AN initiative to help protect farms and rural homes has been launched.
Police are giving away driveway alarms to farmers and people with long drives to help warn them if criminals are trying to get on to their property.
The alarms send a message through radio controls to the owner's house to alert them that someone is entering their drive. They can then contact police.
Northumbria Police have been congratulated by the NFU for the initiative.
Neighbourhood Inspector Sue Peart said: "It shows how the police and the crime reduction partnership work together to produce tangible practices to reduce crime in the area.
"It is helping us when the alarms are being activated it is helping us get to the scene and make arrests."
Farmers in the area are also receiving a fortnightly Farmpost from the police about crime in the area, to warn people and help them protect their property.
