PUPILS from Felton C of E First School had a rubbish day out – and they loved it.
They found out what goes on at a recycling site during their visit to the Northumberland household waste recovery centre in Alnwick.

The 27 pupils saw the different containers for collecting recyclable and reusable materials, and how item
s such as bric-a-brac, electrical and general rubbish are dealt with.

They were also shown the waste transfer side of the site, which is not normally open to the public. They saw the weighbridge and lorries tipping, as well as the areas where general waste and recyclable items are loaded.

Headteacher Barbara Pratt said: "As part of our whole school topic on recycling we decided that a visit to the household waste recovery centre in Alnwick, managed by SITA, would help the children understand how much of our waste can in fact be recycled.

"In school we have been learning how glass, paper and plastic bottles can be recycled but the visit to Alnwick showed the children that we can recycle clothing, computers, fridges and much more.

"As a result of our work, we hope the impact will be to ensure the next generation have a good understanding of the impact waste, litter etc. can have on our environment and that they will appreciate that everyone can do their bit, including children."
