President Marion welcomed 39 members and two visitors to Warkworth WI’s November meeting.
Marion began by telling us the sad news that Faye Charlton had passed away. Pat Boyd’s husband Neville had also passed away. Both funerals, held at St Lawrence’s, were attended by members.
Our competition stall at the hall coffee morning had raised £84 for hall funds. Smaller gifts left over would be put in a bran tub for the Christmas party, with larger items to be used as raffle prizes.
Two teams had been entered in the annual federation quiz and one went on to the final, but did not win.
Pat Calvert won the birthday flowers and Lesley Purdy the chocolates. The competition for an article made from paper was won by Jan Shotton, second Audrey Jones and third Sarah Chesney.
Marion introduced member Chris Harrison to demonstrate the art of paper making.
Chris has a huge knowledge and experience of making paper from many different fibres, gaining experience from around the world. She talked of the beginnings of paper making through to modern techniques when various gadgets are used.
We were all fascinated when Chris showed us how to dip the frame into the vat. She made it look easy, but, of course, she is an expert. Traditionally, an apprenticeship lasted seven years.
Members were keen to ask questions and later several tried their hand at making some paper, taking it home to dry.
Chris was heartily applauded and Marion gave a vote of thanks.
For the Christmas party on Tuesday, December 6, members are reminded to bring cutlery, plates, etc, together with an item for the hampers. The competition will be a party hat. The buffet will be catered and the entertainment provided by the committee.
