Stormy Amble

Have your say

The Olympic Torch arrived in Amble last Friday on a wet and wild day, but these photos from reader Frank Swinhoe show even worse weather in the town.

The top photo is of a day in October 1905 when there were two shipwrecks – the steam ship Zealandia and the galliot Stella Maris went aground on the breakwater. The Stella Maris was refloated but the Zealandia had to be broken up where she lay. The bottom picture, from the 1960s, is of a day when a very high tide and rough weather caused problems for the fishermen.
