He contested the 1970 General Election in Berwick, but was defeated heavily by the Conservative MP Antony Lambton.

Following his resignation, Sir Alan won the by-election on November 8, 1973, by just 57 votes.

Despite the slim margin of victory, he went on to serve as Berwick’s MP until Parliament was dissolved prior to the election on May 7.
