REVIEW: 4Scene – Alnwick Playhouse

If variety is the spice of life, then Northumberland Theatre Company’s annual showcase performance featuring four short plays always offers a real kick.

And this year’s production, 4Scene – promising power, passion, politics and pleasure, is no different.

On opening night yesterday, I was as impressed as I have been in the past; it was by turns funny, sad, angry, melancholic and thought-provoking. Much of the night featured a mixture of the above all at the same time.

I liked some of the plays, all written by playwrights from the North East and Borders, more than others, but this is the delight in watching four in one night – there’s something for everyone.

But whatever my thoughts on the plays themselves, there is no faulting the performances from the cast of six featuring NTC stalwarts and new, younger actors.

Despite funding cuts, the company still puts a great deal of emphasis on bringing new talent through.

And the staging of the night, with a small cast and little space, was once again clever and innovative.

NTC has continued its record of bringing quality professional theatre to rural areas and the second night at the Playhouse today and the rest of the tour this month deserve our support.
