A FAMOUS face in Blagdon has undergone major surgery to get a nose job with a difference.

Northumberlandia donned what is thought to be the world’s largest red nose on Monday, to raise money for Comic Relief.

The giant landform sculpture showed her support for the charity after a team from Durham University Charities Kommittee coordinated her nose job.

The students helped dress Northumberlandia in a 12metre-wide red tarpaulin, then covered it in specially-donated items of red clothing, which will be sold to raise more money for the charity.

The initiative was the brainchild of the Land Trust, which is responsible for managing the landform and surrounding park.

Chief executive Euan Hall said: “We can’t think of a bigger nose anywhere in the world – Northumberlandia’s nose is wider than the Statue of Liberty’s head.

“Although a lady would never tell, her nose is 9.7metres wide cheek to cheek, the width at the top of the nose is 3.2metres and the height is 4.6metres – about the size of four double-decker busses or an average-sized house.”

Schools, community groups, work places and individuals were all invited to support the project by donating red clothing to the team or making red collage squares.

Comic Relief head of UK Grants Gilly Green said: “We are delighted that the Lady of the North has donned a red nose.

“Hopefully, it will inspire people in the North East to do something funny for money and help us raise even more for people living tough lives in the UK and Africa.”

The attempt is now being submitted to Guinness World Records in a bid to secure the title of the world’s biggest red nose.
