Yee-hah! But there’s trouble a-brewing

From the wild creatures of the jungle, desert and the sea last week to the Wild West tonight, it’s all to be found at a north Northumberland theatre.
Last week, the bar was raised as the junior group of the Alnwick Playhouse Youth Theatre transported the audience back in time and across the world for Just So, based on Rudyard Kipling’s classic tales.
From tonight, it’s the turn of the middle group, who hope to live up to the standard set by the younger ones with their performance of Big Trouble in Little Rock.
The action is set way out west in a sleepy town where nothing ever happens.
Gold hasn’t been found, although Hillbilly Willy has been looking for 20 years or more.
But life in the town soon start changing when the mayor hatches a plan to get the railroad to come; then things really begin to heat up.
This comedy, written by Wendy Payn, is full of songs from every gun-slinging musical or TV show.
Director Cheryl Stewart said that rehearsals have been great fun, particularly as the show has been written for a cast of thousands, so everyone has a moment.
There are saloon girls, Mexicans, gold diggers, deputies, a lot of stinky baddies and Old Bob.
What more does a show need? Plenty of thigh slapping and yee-hahing...So come on down to Little Rock.
Following on from their performance of Bugsy Malone earlier in the year, it offers the middle group another chance to show off their comic timing and exuberant singing and dancing skills.
If a night spent watching a riotous show full of Western jokes and every Western song you can think of is just what you need as a winter pick-me-up, then the performances take place tonight (Thursday, November 22) and Saturday, November 24, at Alnwick Playhouse, both at 7.30pm.

• The Playhouse Youth Theatre is this year’s beneficiary of the Jam Jar Army. One of the last fund-raising opportunities of the year will come from programme sales and a raffle held at the performances.
