Lights, camera, action for festival

A celebration of the art of film through premiere screenings, site-specific installations and specially-commissioned projects starts on Wednesday.

The Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival is an international affair, showcasing filmmakers and artists from both sides of the border, as well as those from as far as India and the USA.

The 2012 programme is the event’s most ambitious and this year’s theme is the relationship between the moving and still image, showcasing a mix of film and photography.

The festival, which runs until September 23, will present one newly-commissioned live event, two artist talks, two filmmaker question and answer sessions, three short film programmes, four workshops, 12 feature films, 17 installations and one outdoor projection in five different locations around the town.

This will be in addition to the festival’s 10 venues, which includes The Maltings.

More than 50 artists and filmmakers, representing 17 countries in total, are involved.

Highlights this year include a 50th anniversary screening of Chris Marker’s La Jetée and the UK premiere of artist Matt McCormick’s The Great Northwest.
