The satisfaction that comes from gathering something home-grown is not confined to vegetables alone, and especially at this time of year, we never take for granted the assorted ornamental plants that contribute towards floral decorations.

How could we have sat down to Christmas dinner without a central table arrangement?!

The lady of the house delights in trawling the garden, trug on arm, collecting foliage flowers and stems – a mixture of colour, form and fragrance.

When these are all brought together, the scene is set for my pre-prandial test – to give the full name of every plant in the arrangement!
