‘This remarkable occasion’ was how a telegram from the Queen described the 106th birthday which Amble’s grand old lady, Mrs Isabella Bell celebrated on Sunday.

The telegram sent by Her Majesty’s private secretary said: “The Queen is much interested to hear that you are celebrating your 106th birthday and sends warm congratulations and good wishes on this remarkable occasion.”

It was sent from a London post office at 8.20 on Sunday morning.

Mrs Bell’s room was adorned with beautiful flowers and plants for her birthday.

They were sent to her by many well-wishers from as far away as America.

Dozens of greetings cards and telegrams together with other presents marked this amazing milestone of a wonderful old lady.
