ULUGBEK Hudayarov from Uzbekistan made many friends over four years in north Northumberland when he lived in Seahouses, studied at the Newcastle Business School of Northumbria University, became a member of the Rotary Club of Seahouses and District and a volunteer with Berwick Voluntary Forum, Motivate! and North Northumberland Voluntary Action.
Rotarian Margaret Claydon and I have just returned from Uzbekistan and Ulugbek asked that his kind regards and best wishes be given to all those people who know him.
Margaret and I were honoured guests among almost 800 friends and relatives, who att
ended the day-long party to celebrate the circumcision of his young son, Eros (over 85 per cent of the population of former Soviet State Uzbekistan are Muslims).
Since his return to Uzbekistan, Ulugbek has been working as an auditor in the finance department of the Government Ministry of Justice.
At the same time, he has been using the skills and knowledge gained during studying for his MA in business and management and postgraduate diplomas in project management and marketing to build and launch the first mill in his village producing 'refined white' flour.
Already, the mill is hugely successful and provides regular work and income for his disabled brother and other members of the Hudayarov family.
Just before I left Samarkand, Ulugbek was thrilled to be successful at the last of a series of six interviews and he was appointed as the assistant to the chief executive of a relatively new three-person economic development unit for the Government of Uzbekistan.
Ulugbek takes on responsibility for the development of the auto industry, building on the success of the UzDaewoo plant.
As I flew out of Tashkent, Ulugbek began his new job!
Ulugbek's widowed mother is well and thriving as more and more grandchildren are produced by her 12 children (in Soviet times, the then President Breshnev presented her with a special 'Hero Mother' medal for giving birth 12 times!).
Ulugbek's wife Iroda sends her best wishes to those Seahouses Rotarians that she met in 2006.
Kelvin Rushworth,
2008-2009 Immediate Past President,
Rotary Club of Seahouses and District
