YOUNG soccer stars put on their shooting boots as they battled for honours in an annual football tournament.
Fifteen teams locked horns in the Hipsburn School 5-a-side football tournament on Saturday.
The competition, sponsored by Trident Soccer, is now firmly established in the north Northumberland football calendar as the leading tournament for first schools.
And with the standard higher than ever, it was St Michael's Clayport Giants who were crowned champions.
Goals from Sam Thompson and Christopher Cooke teed-up victory for the Giants as they beat Wooler 2-0 in the final.
It was a fine reward for the team – made up of Kiron Moffat, Christopher Cooke, Harry Davison, Elliot Campbell, Matthew Campbell, Daryll Cooke, Sam Thompson, Craig Vint and Ashley Grisdale – who were runners-up in the Alnwick Trident Soccer Tournament a fortnight ago.
Mandy Davison, high level teaching assistant (HLTA) at St Michael's First School, said: "Everybody was thrilled to pieces to win. It was only the second tournament we have played in and the first one we have won. It means so much."
Meanwhile, Swarland took third-place in dramatic fashion, beating Rock with a golden goal in extra-time.
But there was some consolation for Rock, with Moses Jakobsen voted player-of-the-tournament.
FA coach and Newcastle United scout Ryan Jobson said: "Trident Soccer would like to thank all the parents and children for making the tournament such a huge success. The standard of teams and play is getting higher each year and this weekend's event must rank among the best Hipsburn tournament ever staged."
Dot Charlton, headteacher at Hipsburn First School, said: "We really appreciate the efforts of everybody who helped make it happen.
"We really appreciate the work of Trident Soccer in holding the tournament and special thanks to the Friends of Hipsburn School for organising and arranging it.
"A big thank-you to all the people who came and supported the event on the day. The atmosphere was lovely."
