Manager Mike Openshaw had a tough job in picking the starting line-up but handed a start to debutante Brad McClelland at right-back.
The opening exchanges in the game were shared by both teams in an even first 10 minutes.
The breakthrough came
in the 15th minute when Brad Simpson brilliantly brought down a ball played in by Jordan Lowes and 'Simpa' showed great footwork to turn the defender, however he was chopped down, and the penalty was given.
Former Ashington player Rory Mallaburn stepped up and smashed the ball home (0-1).
It only took the hosts five minutes to get back on level terms when a corner was flicked in at the back post by their big centre-half (1-1).
It looked to be heading into the break all-square until an Alnwick corner fell to Brett Robertson on the edge of the box.
He took a quick shot which took a big deflection off an Ashington defender and rolled into the bottom corner. Half-time: 1-2.
The second half saw Alnwick begin to dominate the game as they had done the previous week.
Joe Henderson came on and gave extra width to the midfield; he also came close to scoring with a volley from outside the box.
Liam Ramsay and Jordan Trotter continued to boss the game from midfield in an ever- improving midfield partnership. Brad McClelland was enjoying a great debut alongside the defence of Allan, Douglas and Hogg, who again impressed.
The visitors added a third when good hold-up play from Mallaburn set Brett Robertson away on goal and he didn't disappoint when he hit a well-placed shot into the back of the net (1-3).
Timmy Young was introduced and was lively on the wing. Not long after, more good play between Mallaburn and Robertson saw 'Mallaz' tap in his second of the game after a number of one-twos (1-4). The home side got a way back into the game when they were awarded a penalty.
Martyn Nesbit will feel hard done by as he saved the penalty but the Ashington midfielder poked in the rebound (2-4).
Alnwick continued to outplay their opponents and Sean Anderson was a livewire down the right hand side. It was Anderson who played a part in the goal of the game to wrap it up for the away side.
McClelland and Anderson combined fantastically down the right-hand side with McClelland running the full length of the pitch supporting Anderson. After tearing apart the left-hand side of the Ashington team, Anderson pulled the ball across the box to the arriving McClelland, who showed great composure to finish off a sublime piece of football from Alnwick (2-5).
Ross Tait and Gary Brown came on with fresh legs and worked hard.
Ashington managed to pull another consolation goal back five minutes from time when Alnwick failed to clear the ball properly. The home side's midfielder hit a well-struck shot from the edge of the area which was too good for Nesbit (3-5).
