FROM an entry of 80 competitors, 17-year-old three-handicap Alan Potts (Goswick) won the summer meeting of the Northumberland Junior Golfing Association by one shot at a blustery Newcastle United course, writes Chris Robinson.
Potts' victory was even better considering he had a triple bogey seven on the 408-yard par-four first hole!

He fought back with typical tenacity. After two pars to steady the ship, he had a fine birdie two on the 154 yard par three fourth.

He
followed suit on the 546-yard par-five sixth, but slipped with a bogey at the 436-yard par-four eighth. Following a par at the 561-yard par-five ninth he turned in a one-over-par 37.

He started back with another fine birdie at the 566-yard par-five tenth, then had an exemplary run from the 11th, 4-4-5-3-3-4-4-4, which were all pars. He covered the second nine in a one-under-par 35, which gave him the one shot to beat Gray for the cup.

Steven Fawcitt (Morpeth) shot a creditable two-over- par 74, while 14-year-old five handicap Elliott Wilson (Goswick), shot an excellent three-over-par 75.

He dropped shots on the front nine taking bogey sixes on the two par five's and turned in a three-over- par 39.

On the back nine Wilson also played superb golf, scoring pars at every hole, apart from a birdie at the 189-yard par-three 14th, and he returned in a one-under-par 35 for his 74.

He was closely followed by 17-year-old four-handicap Richard Caisley from Foxton Hall, Alnmouth, who shot a four-over-par 76, with a two-over-par 38 for both nines.
