FROM an entry of more than 100, 14-year-old five-handicap Lewis Fairbairn (Goswick) shot an excellent four-over-par 75 to win the 14 and under's best gross score in the Northumberland Junior Golfing Association's Autumn Meeting at Newbiggin, writes Chris Robinson.
It was a round of fluctuating fortunes – on the first nine he shot a disappointing four-over-par 41, including a triple bogey seven at the 345-yard, par-four sixth.

On the back nine he shot off like a rocket, fitting for this time of the year, wit
h birdie threes at the tenth and 11th, then making a hat-trick with a par three at the 12th.

He birdied the 490-yard, par-five 14, then at the 353-yard, par-four 16 he fizzled out like a damp squib with a double-bogey six. Following two pars, he returned in a one-under-par 34.

Fellow 14-year-old clubmate, four handicap Elliot Wilson, also shot 75 and they finished joint sixth.

Wilson opened with a one-under-par 36, but had an up-and-down back nine holes with double-bogey sixes at the 11th and 16th interspersed with a fine birdie two at the short 12th.

He returned in a four-over-par 39 to tie sixth with Fairbairn.

Fifteen-year-old three-handicap Stephen Johnstone (Burgham Park) was fourth following an excellent two-over-par 73.

Daniel Shevill (Prudhoe), the junior and senior Northumberland County player, won the title with a one-under-par 71, and pipped 15-year-old Richard Robson-Crosby (Ponteland) on the back nine holes.
