INTERNATIONAL soccer starlets Lucy Bronze and Lucy Staniforth have helped England make a flying start in their U17 World Cup campaign.
The football duo, both from Alnwick, played their part in the Three Lions' 3-0 win over Group D opponents Brazil, just hours ago.
The game was England's first of the competition, which is held in New Zealand, and the three points have seen the Lionesses roar to the top of the group.
Three late goals secured the points for England against the south American side, dubbed as one of the pre-tournament favourites.
A Lauren Bruton goal on 75 minutes was sandwiched between double strikes from Danielle Carter, who netted in the 71st and 89th minute.
Lucy Staniforth started the opening Group D encounter while Lucy bronze was on the bench.
And twice in the first period Staniforth, who plays for Sunderland, broke through on the right, but in both cases her cut-backs were wasted, Isobel Christiansen gliding the ball wide and Carter shooting straight at Aline in the Brazil goal.
At the other end, Brazil's best chance of the half came when Juliana Cardozo volleyed a speculative shot at goal from 35 yards which smashed off the underside of the bar.
Staniforth was taken off just after the hour while Sunderland Ladies player Bronze replaced Rachel Daly after 69 minutes.
And England took the lead just minutes after when Leyton Orient's Carter slid the ball past Brazilian keeper Aline.
The Three Lions doubled their lead through Bruton, who plays for Arsenal, before Carter wrapped up the proceedings when she turned her marker and fired home.
England recorded the victory in front of more than 10,000 fans in the Wellington Stadium.
And boss Lois Fidler was delighted at the opening Group D romp.
"We went into this game as underdogs, and I think people possibly underestimated us. I can't fault the players, they prepared thoroughly for this game and deserved the win. Brazil are a fantastic side with loads of flair, and we've managed to get a great result against them today," England's Head Coach told www.fifa.com
Meanwhile, Brazil coach Marcos Gaspar said: "The game was very balanced, but after the first goal, the girls got a bit rattled. And to lose your No10 is never good, for a Brazilian side! But this competition is only starting, and we need to continue to think positively and make sure we are prepared for the next two games."
England now face Nigeria on November 2. The African side won their opening Group D match against Korea Republic 2-1. Victory would see the Lionesses qualify for the tournament's quarter-final stage.
