Nick has been a society committee member for five years and a director for the last two. He takes over as chairman from Tom Comber, who held the position for two years, and he will be assisted by vice chairman Simon Orpwood.
The role brings with
it a number of responsibilities, including overseeing the annual Glendale Show held on August Bank Holiday Monday. Attracting in the region of 15,000 visitors, this is the largest annual event held in north Northumberland and one of the leading equine shows in the area.
Farming with his wife Kirstie, Nick is actively involved in rural life in the Glendale area.
A keen horseman and former point to point jockey, when not farming Nick acts as a racecourse judge across the North of England and Scotland, with the responsibility of deciding the final results for photo finishes.
Nick said of his new role: "I am delighted to have been asked to be chairman and I look forward to working with the committee to further strengthen our position.
"During the last three years GAS has seen many developments and achievements including seeing the highest gate numbers in the show's 118-year history. However, I am under no illusions, taking into account the current economic climate, I know that this year will be testing in terms of maintaining visitor numbers and funding so we will need to work harder than ever.
"In addition like all businesses, farming is currently facing some tough challenges so it is vital that we continue our work on protecting and promoting rural issues. The society's work is now needed more than ever and I am determined that it will continue."
Glendale Agricultural Society is a not-for-profit organisation with more than 300 members and an annual programme of members' events.
Its major annual event is Glendale Show, a showcase for farming and rural life. As well as the livestock, equine, industrial and horticultural classes, a new addition this year is one for ex-racehorses. Main ring highlights include The Chariots of Fire display team, the sheep show, Prince Bishops falconry display and The City of Newcastle Pipe Band.
