THE Glendale Agricultural Society has announced that this year's annual stock judging evening will take place at one of Northumberland's leading livestock farms.
The event will be held on Friday, July 10 at Elsdon Burn in the College Valley, courtesy of Ted Fox and his family.

Competitive stock judging events used to be held regularly throughout Northumberland, however it is believed that this event is no
w the only one of its kind in the region.

Stock judging explains to the competitors the finer points of pedigree livestock breeding. It highlights what the breeders are looking for and the essential traits that they want to see in their sheep and cattle.

Competitors will be invited to judge a range of classes including Texel and Cheviot sheep classes, and Luing and Simling cattle classes.

Ted farms at both Elsdon Burn and Ewart, near Wooler, and has a reputation for being one of the most progressive livestock farmers and suckler cow breeders in the area.

Predominantly a hill farm, Elsdon Burn is home to 4,000 ewes and 1,600 cattle and Ted regularly shows them at Glendale Show in Wooler.

The evening is a great opportunity for competitors to not only judge a fine display of livestock but also to visit one of the largest livestock farms in the area in one of the most beautiful valleys in north Northumberland.

Ted said: "I am delighted that The Glendale Agricultural Society is continuing to encourage people to learn this important skill.

"Events like these give livestock farmers a focus and a showcase for their animals.

"The stock judging is intended to be a social event for all the family, so in addition to the standard classes, there will be dedicated Young Farmers' classes, a children's class and a novelty class."

Society chairman Nick Hargreave said: "With ever increasing pressures on both time and resources, stockjudging events are becoming few and far between. However, as a Society we are fully aware that in this area renowned for livestock farming, farmers and those who work on the farm really do need to know what makes a top quality breeding animal."

The event is sponsored by Yorkshire Dales Farmhouse ice cream. Get there at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Hot beef rolls will be available to buy on the night.
