Ponteland 197-7 beat Alnwick 148 all out by 49 runs

ALNWICK were eventually beaten by 49 runs after an entertaining match, which was closer than the scoreline suggested, at Ponteland on Saturday.

re 197 for seven in their inning largely due to a captain's innings of 109 not out by Stuart Taylor.
The Alnwick bowling was hampered by an injury to Jim Burston who captured the first three wickets for 15 runs.
In reply a first-wicket stand of 79 between Rameez Shahzad and Michael Brewis appeared to put Alnwick in a strong position, but as has happened often this season once the main batsmen were out the remaining were unable to consolidate the position and the game was lost.
Ponteland batted first and Burston struck quickly having Ealey caught at the wicket followed soon after by Clarke and Hamill, both bowled without scoring.
Common and Taylor added 19 before Common was bowled by Shahzad and, when Crearer was caught, the home side were 68 for five, followed 12 runs later by the dismissal of Gardner.
Taylor and Appleby then produced the match-winning stand of 86 with Taylor the more aggressive of the partnership until the latter stages of the innings when they both quickened the scoring rate, Appleby finally being caught for 34. The innings finally closed on 197 for seven.
Alnwick appeared to be mounting a serious challenge as both openers were not in too much trouble but when Brewis was well caught in the slips and followed two runs later by Shahzad and Frater, both adjudged lbw.
At 116 Thompson fell in similar circumstances and from this point the challenge petered out and the innings finally closed 49 runs short of the required total.
