Clara Vale 199 all out tied with ALnmouth & Lesbury 199 all outSaturday, September 1
WITHOUT Clough, part-time footballer Vickers, Little Mac, Joe Poole and groom-to-be Paige, the task was always going to be tough for Alnmout
h and Lesbury.
Skipper Pearson made batting difficult with some great pace and accuracy.
His first victim was professional Balasandrum, and not to be out-done, young Nick Denton shot from the hip, with Tudor taking a remarkable catch to remove Porteus.
Pearson's next victim was Twizel, out lbw for five runs. Miller was caught behind after an earlier scare, and this brought some lusty blows from Mee.
Denton made the breakthrough, snaring Mee for 32 with the help of Tudor's catching again.
The next ball up rooted Warne's stumps, bringing the hat-trick ball.
This time Tudor could not play the same tune, as the ball whistled through his fingers. It took until the fourth ball for his next wicket.
It was a devastating spell of pace bowling. Richard Neil again produced some great bowling, netting him three hard-earned wickets. Clara Vale were all out for 199.
In came the Alnmouth batsman armed with grenades, bren guns and even bats as the battle to win ensued.
Getting off to a moderate start again, both openers preferred to nibble on the extras from a rather superb tea, than stay too long at the crease.
But John Denton, elder brother of young Nick, fancied a bit of the action. He got help from the other end when Neil, Pearson and Hodgson, fired some shots to keep the board ticking over. However, the trip to Specsavers this week paid off, as he smashed the bowlers all over the place for sixes and fours, bringing the target into sight.
A fine cameo from another sibling from the Steve Poole breeding programme came to the crease. Simon showed his potential by dispatching the opening bowler for a fine six, then at the other end a good four. However, we was found out trying to sweep a ball and he headed for the pavilion perplexed by his shot selection.
Another junior, Hutchinson, came in, looking solid. But he too succumbed to another lbw from the wily but solid Greener.
The crescendo was to come with the scores tied; both Dentons were now at crease.
They took the challenge on but with two balls left, Nick aimed at one. The ball glanced off his glove and he was taken out by the wicket keeper, with scores level and points even.
As the dust settled, Clara claimed victory but on the horizon the scoreboard loomed showing 199 – a fantastic game of cricket was enjoyed by all. As for the Dentons it was honours even. Nick hauled five for 31, his best figures, and John hit his best score of 97 not out.
