Alnwick (187-4) beat Burnopfield (185 all out) by six wickets.

ALNWICK finally got their first victory of the season, defeating Burnopfield by six wickets on Saturday with a good team performance.

Bateman, Stewart and Wright got the wickets and Peberdy, Brewis, Matthewson and Wright were successful with the bat.

Burnopfield posted a total of 185 all out which was probably 30 or 40 runs more than it should have been, due to some missed chances. Alnwick eventually knocked off the runs with three overs to spare.

Burnopfield batted first and had two early shocks as Bateman bowled Atkinson and then had danger man Baxter caught by Stewart.

Riley and Young then steadied the innings, each scoring into the 40s before the introduction of spin with Stewart and Wright being responsible for the dismissal of both.

This pair continued to cause Burnopfield problems and only Radcliffe and Allen offered any resistance. Eventually the innings closed on 185.

Brewis and Peberdy then set the basis of the Alnwick victory with a competent first-wicket partnership of 67 before Brewis was given out lbw, a questionable decision, for 39.

Peberdy and Thompson moved the score to 97 when Peberdy was out for 45, followed two runs later by Thompson.

In past games, this would have signalled the demise of the innings but Wright, Matthewson and Kelly steered the home side to victory for a well-deserved win. Hopefully this win will bolster confidence and Alnwick will continue to acquire points and move up the table.
