Alnwick 112 all out lost to Backworth 114-5 by five wickets.Monday, August 26
ALNWICK played their second fixture of the weekend entertaining Backworth on Monday and, in a low-scoring but nevertheless enthralling encounter, we
re defeated by five wickets.
But it was a closer match then the margin of defeat appeared.
Alnwick were invited to bat first and were in trouble immediately when Brewis fell without scoring, followed 14 runs later by Thompson.
Stewart and Rameez Shahzad then produced a stand of 72 against some fine bowling by the visitors but with the dismissal of Shahzad the remainder of the batting folded and Alnwick were all out for 112.
If Backworth thought that it was going to be easy, they were quickly made to change their mind as Bateman removed first Robson and then Rankin for 15.
Shahzad, in his first over, caught and bowled Wilkie on 21.
The always reliable Jon Young bowled tightly and had his reward when he had Puri well caught by Tom Robertson.
Stewart was introduced into the attack when Young was injured and he had the dangerous Stubbs caught at the wicket but the damage had been done and Black and Mason saw the visitors safely home with six overs to
spare.
The match was sponsored by Cropwsie North Limited of Greensfield Industrial Park, Alnwick.
