Trees and fences blown flat, roads blocked, caravans overturned and chimneys blown down...that was the picture in north Northumberland on Sunday morning after a wind of near-hurricane force had left a trail of destruction in its wake. Two large trees fell across Denwick Lane during the night and the road was closed to traffic until noon.

Another big tree came down on Abbey Bank blocking the Alnwick to Eglingham road. Traffic had to be diverted via Broomhouse and it was not until five o’clock on Sunday afternoon that the road was re-opened. Single-line traffic was in operation on stretches of the Great North Road between Alnwick and Felton where five trees partially blocked the road. The trees were down on the Alnwick to Alnmouth road and workmen were busy during the day clearing debris.
