10 YEARS AGO Thursday, September 12, 2002
Alnwick has been confirmed as a gardener’s paradise after scooping the Northumbria in Bloom best small town trophy. The town last won the award in 1992 and spent 10 years in the wilderness before turning the judges’ heads this year. They were impressed by the extremely high standard of the town’s private gardens and public parks, which have left the competition green with envy. Alnwick in Bloom chairman, Tom Pattinson, said: “This is just amazing. We certainly didn’t expect to win, but it just goes to show you, if you keep plugging away you get there eventually. We won this 10 years ago, but then things seemed to tail off for a while, but all the garden competitions there are have helped it I suppose. We weren’t even allowed to put The Alnwick Garden in, just imagine the impact we would have had if that had gone in too.”
