Fifty years of friendship with rural French village

A north Northumberland village and its French counterpart are preparing to celebrate 50 years of friendship with a golden anniversary get-together.

The Shilbottle-Héry Amicale is holding the event on Friday, November 9, at 7pm in the Community Hall in Shilbottle.

A warm welcome is extended to everyone who has been involved with the exchange at any time over the last 50 years or anyone interested in joining.

There will be a pooled supper and an opportunity to share memories of the past and ideas for the future, as preparations begin for the golden anniversary of this long-lasting exchange in 2013.

Shilbottle has been twinned with the French village of Héry since 1963, and during almost fifty years of friendship, many families have enjoyed happy and memorable holidays in Northumberland and in France.

Héry is a village in a rural area about 80 miles south-east of Paris, close to the historic town of Auxerre, in the region which produces Chablis wine.

Current members of the exchange, some of whom have been involved from its earliest days, are organising a special celebration of the 50th anniversary and they would like to hear from everyone who has been involved across the years.

In late July next year, a party of French visitors will be arriving for the exchange and the Northumberland members of the Amicale would like as many people as possible who are connected to the twinning to come to a celebratory reception.

An exhibition and a number of other events are being planned for the coming months as well.
